Packing for a move is an ideal time to start thinking more about the environment and how you can reduce your carbon footprint. From packing materials to cleaning products to even the smallest of details, you can easily go green during your move. Here are the top five tips on how to go about it:
1. Hire a Moving Company
When it comes to moving, in order to save money, many people decide to do it on their own, or to utilize cars from friends and families. However, making multiple trips between multiple cars is not only wasting gas, it is polluting the air. If you hire a moving company like North American Moving Services, they can fit all of your boxes and furniture into their truck, with the odds and ends fitting in your car. Instead of driving back and forth, you only have to drive once to your new place.
Moving gives you the opportunity to see exactly how much stuff you have accumulated, and gives you time to determine whether you really need it or not. Before moving, host a yard sale where you can sell or give away non-essential items. Items that do not sell can be listed on sites like Craig’s List or donated to recycling places and thrift stores. Donate any unwanted books to local libraries or schools, and if you have any old electronics, give them to an electronic waste company.
3. Move with Recyclable Materials
If possible, look to move with Earth Friendly Moving boxes. This company provides five different stackable sizes of boxes made from recycled plastic bottles. The rental cost is a dollar per box per week.
However, if you cannot find earth-friendly boxes, check with local grocery stores to see if they have any boxes they can lend you. Plus, different moving companies often have a used box bin where customers can take free boxes. Also, Rent-a-Crate has different locations where you can rent re-usable crates for your move.
When packing, instead of paying for packing paper, try to use recycled materials like old magazines, newspapers, or earth-friendly paper. To be even greener, try to pack all breakable items with clothes or sheets.
4. Eco-Friendly Cleaning Supplies
After moving all items out of the house, be sure to clean your house with eco-friendly products. Not only are the products less harmful to the environment, they are less harmful to humans as well. Look for nontoxic, biodegradable cleaners, which can typically be found at any grocery store or warehouse store.
5. Cut Down on Junk Mail
While it is difficult to get rid of junk mail entirely, a great way to cut down on it is to file a temporary change of address with the post office rather than a permanent one. The U.S. Postal Service sells marketers lists of permanent addresses, but they do not bother with the temporary ones.
Utilizing these tips will help you stay eco-sensitive during your move, and will hopefully lead others to do the same.
