Over recent years, we have become increasingly aware of the environmental implications our actions can have for our planet. Every day it seems that we hear some new warning about climate change, and its effects can already be seen in many countries across the world. The ice caps are melting, and many species of wildlife are struggling to survive due to pollution and changes to their climate and habitat. The powers that be are only now realizing that we must act now to protect our environment and wildlife. Otherwise, we may find that any changes we make in the future is going to be a case of ‘too little, too late’.

Such a mistake will be costly for all the species who call the planet earth their home, with humans being no exception. So, what can just one person do in the face of climate change and impending environmental disaster, I hear you ask? Well, the answer to that question is not a lot. But if each and every person were to make a few simple changes to their everyday life, and endeavor to live in a more eco-friendly way, we could make a hell of a difference.

Walk, Cycle, Run

We could all do with being more active, so make a commitment to leave the car keys at home a couple of times a week. Walk, cycle or run to work if you have to. Not only will it help you to stay fit, and save you money on gas, you’ll also be helping to protect the environment to boot!

Mend, Update & Use Again

We live in a culture that can be quite wasteful at times. A lot of us are guilty of throwing perfectly good clothing and furniture away because we know that most things can be easily replaced. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to buy new things, but you can go about it in a less wasteful way. The point is that with a bit of imagination, you can find a new use for just about anything.

Clothes can be donated to charity, or if you’re handy with a sewing needle, you could repair and update old clothes with a bit of cotton and creative embellishment. Equally, old items of furniture can be repainted, or the parts used to make something entirely new. If you’re stuck for style and design ideas, visiting furniture stores is one great way of seeing what’s popular and finding inspiration.

Eco-Friendly Eating

Although it can be tempting to just run down to your local supermarket and stock up on out of season produce, it really isn’t necessary. You should always try and buy meat and veggies from local sustainable sources. This helps to support the local economy, and you’re not adding to your carbon footprint by buying goods that have had to be flown in. Plus, fresh locally sourced food always tastes so much better!

Remember, there’s strength in numbers, and there’s no limit to what can be achieved when people unite together in a common cause. So, get out there and get eco-friendly, because we’ve got a planet to save!
