We all know how important it is to conserve our planet’s resources and to reduce our energy consumption. That’s a great concept in theory, but do you know how to actually do it in practice? Most of us depend so heavily upon energy in our daily lives that going without it cold turkey simply isn’t an option, but there are small changes that everyone can make that will add up to a big difference. Creating a green, environmentally friendly home is a goal that every family can achieve.
The first thing families can do to conserve energy is to harness the power of natural, renewable energy sources. The sun, for example, has been heating up the planet for millions of years and is still going strong. Why not harness some of that power by installing solar equipment in your home? Solar power can be used to heat your home and also heat the water your family uses, making it a great option.
Like the sun, the wind is another renewable energy resources. Many businesses have caught on to the energy that can be generated by the wind via a wind turbine, and homeowners can take that same path. Small, residential wind turbines can generate enough emission-free energy to power your home, provided you like in an area with enough annual wind speeds to power the turbine.
Here are some other tips families can use to reduce their carbon footprint on the earth.
- Buy second hand. Especially when it comes to things like furniture, cars and other items that require a lot of energy to produce, buying second hand is a very environmentally friendly choice.
- Take advantage of natural light as much as you can. Installing a skylight can increase the flood of natural light into darker areas of your home, allowing you to hold off on reaching for the light switch a little longer. Speaking of lights, it’s also a good idea to replace your energy-zapping lightbulbs with green, energy-efficient ones.
- Reduce water waste by installing low-flow toilets and showerheads in your bathroom.
- Buy your food locally. Instead of buying produce that has travelled hundreds or thousands of miles in a truck to get to you, shop for your fruits and veggies from a farm stand, right from the person who picked them with his own two hands.
Making green choices for your family doesn’t have to be hard. By making small changes every day, you can reduce your carbon footprint and bring our energy consumption way down. By reducing the use of energy, taking advantage of natural energy sources and taking steps to buy products that take less energy to produce, you can make a significant positive impact on the environment. Make green living part of your family mandate and everyone wins, both day and for all of your tomorrows.
