We live in CT. We're residing with Hardiplank & Hardi Trim. To improve water resistance, windows are being replaced at the same time.

According to Jame Hardie Inc. paint applied to the siding over the original finish has a life expectancy of about seven years. This is as long as you follow their specifications for painting as follows:

  • Make sure all caulking joints are sound;
  • apply one coat of acrylic latex primer, over spot priming for any surface damaged areas, and
  • two coats of exterior rated acrylic latex paint from any one of a number of manufacturers.

Go to this page on the James Hardie website for more specific information.
