With Hurricane Irene threatening to cause widespread damage in much of the U.S., it is clear that hurricane season is once again upon us. The high-speed winds tend to cause the most damage, generally by way of flying debris. While it is difficult to predict how severe Hurricane Irene, or any other subsequent hurricanes will affect your area, it is always good to be prepared just in case, and SavATree, the “green choice for tree service and lawn care,” has some tips on how to help prevent damage to your home.

The first tip may seem a bit obvious, but it is still very critical. While there isn’t a very high probability of a larger, deep-rooted tree falling during a storm, any weak branches it contains do have the potential to fall and cause serious damage to anything they land on.

In order to avoid something like this happening, it is a good idea to have your trees pruned by a professional. What a proper pruning does is take care of all of the dead or drying branches that pose the most risk during any sort of storm, but especially in a hurricane. SavATree recommends that “it is important for a tree to have a central leader with no narrow forks or branches that leave the trunk at an acute angle.”

It is also a good idea to stake any young trees to the ground to help ensure that they stay in place throughout the heavy winds. Removing any tree limbs that hang over utility lines or any sort of roof is another way to lessen the likelihood of damage during a storm, as well as cleaning out gutters and down spouts of any leaf clutter.
