Getting the lighting in your home right is the key to having a warm and homely atmosphere. It’s proven that lots of light makes a space feel bigger, as well as making us happier to be in it, but lighting costs both money and energy. This post takes a look at how you can be more environmentally friendly with lighting in your home with a few simple tips and hints.

Room Appropriate Lighting

Lighting doesn’t need to be uniform throughout your home; the lighting for your bathroom won’t necessarily be the same as the lighting you want for your bedroom or lounge.

Bathrooms ideally need to be brightly lit for us to see what we’re doing – grooming routines like putting on makeup, or shaving in front of your bathroom mirror demand good lighting. Similarly, in your kitchen you need to be able to see exactly how your food is getting along, and stay safe while around heat, sharp knives and other potential hazards.

Bedroom, living room and dining room works when it’s subtle, gentle and adds interest – far from the utilitarian stylings of the bathroom and kitchen.

How can we get bright lighting without it costing the earth? Using energy saving lighting in your bedroom, hallways and living areas saves money and energy, but there are great bright alternatives as discussed below.

Money & Energy Saving Options

There’s no need to sit in the dark to save money: a great way to get bright, cost-effective, and less energy-consuming lighting in your home is to install LED lightbulbs. Choosing the right bulb can be confusing as there are so many different types of LED lighting on offer. If you need some pointers, Bulbs2Go has created a handy set of guides for choosing the right lightbulbs for your home.

Effective Positioning

Use lighting strategically and follow expert interior designer tips to maximise the efficiency of the lights in your home:

  • Don’t use down-lighting in the dining room – bright overhead lights are intrusive and feel too utilitarian for a relaxed setting – opt for gentle, low power floor lamps.
  • Use the dimmer switch to get the perfect balance for evening lighting and save energy.
  • Use small table and LED reading lamps to light up particular areas without using the main light unnecessarily and stop your eyes getting strained.
  • Accent lighting can be a great alternative to large main feature light, and add interest to a room. Pick out architectural features like alcoves and fire places with wall-mounted lights.

Picking appropriate lighting for specific areas of your home is the first step to making your home more energy efficient by only using exceptionally bright lights where they’re needed.
