As I research innovative, break through design/architecture firms, I am always delighted to come across companies that are based on the very ideals that I am pursuing! RTA Studio is one of these cutting edge firms. They were founded in 1999 by directors Richard Naish and Tim Melville.

Every day I sit through classes hoping to absorb all the
information that I possibly can to become a great architect. I go to work,
detailing concrete expansions, drawing the basics for someone to build a
mandatory but uninspiring addition to a local company and I question the normal
answers.  Is this really how I will turn
my passion into my ultimate reality?

I look back at how far I’ve come and I know how far I still
have to push to get through. I think about how much it mattered to get A’s
through school, now I encounter the teachers who refuse to give A’s because
they feel they are not doing their jobs correctly if grades that high are
achieved. We joke that I will be in school forever, but I would rather be
learning and applying what I am gaining than to just be here, taking tests and
showing up.

I want to work on projects that make a difference. I think
somewhere in architecture, the mundane tasks of common jobs weigh down many
very talented individuals and others become conceited and forget, like
politicians, that they are working for the people.

Change is hard to embrace in many instances and with new
codes and new emphasis being placed on sustainability, every day is a new day in
this industry. But to me, those words are beautiful because although I want to
preserve the past, I don’t want to design the past. I want to combine history
with a dynamic future!

“Our design work contributes to the urban context by
challenging, provoking and complementing existing landscapes, spaces and structures for people and their needs.”
