Although we’re not all dedicated eco-warriors, most of us want to do our bit to help the environment: we donate money to environmental causes where we can, make an effort not to waste electricity, and make a real effort to recycle.

However, very few of us do as much as we could. We’re not talking about changing the world, but all of those little things that add up to make a big difference. Often, these are no more than small changes to our lifestyle, yet they can have a pretty drastic impact when it comes to reducing our carbon footprints.

In many cases, this shortcoming is little more than ignorance with regards to how much we could do day-to-day to save energy. It’s not that we don’t care; simply that we don’t how to make a difference. To help you out, here are three simple steps to make your home a greener place to be…

#1: Switch to LEDs

As simple as it sounds, just changing the lighting that you use can cause a major reduction in your carbon footprint. LED lighting requires far less energy than its traditional counterparts, and it could also save you a lot of money in the long run too. LED lights do have a higher initial outlay, yet the cash savings you could make year on year are phenomenal – around £240 per annum. This means that they’re a great way to help the planet at the same time as lining your own pockets – what’s not to like about that?

#2: Choose Energy Efficient Appliances

Another simple step that can make a big difference is upgrading some of your energy appliances. We realise that fridges, ovens, and freezers can cost quite a lot to replace, but microwaves, kettles, and coffeemakers are all much more reasonably priced. Changing just one of these items to a more energy-efficient counterpart can make a big difference to your energy usage over the course of the year, and the less energy you use, the less money it costs to run your household.

#3: Switch to Solar Power

Solar power is another wonderful way to cut your energy costs and reduce your carbon footprint in one fell swoop. Instead of relying on electricity, it allows you to harness the power of sunlight, storing energy that can be used to run your appliances. Although solar panels can be expensive to install, some people will find that they qualify for government grants or free solar panels, meaning that there’s no initial cost to cover.

There are just three of the many ways that you could increase the eco-friendliness of your home, but there are lots of others to consider too. With a multitude of grants and finance sources to help you along your way, why not change your own small corner of the world today?
