Earth Advantage Institute and Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) have teamed up to provide a free online course on how to reduce home energy use by 15 to 20 percent by a placement method of keeping all ducts within the conditioned space of new homes.  A self-paced online course geared toward industry professionals, the self-paced tutorials, ”Ducts Inside” teaches builders, designers, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals a new energy-efficient method that can save energy and home heating and cooling costs.

The common practice of new building have been to place HVAC ducts and air handlers in unconditioned spaces. The course outlines six methods and best practices on placement of ductwork within a conditioned place.

“From an energy efficiency perspective, installing ductwork through an unconditioned attic or crawl space makes about as much sense as running ducts outside a window and into the next room,” said Bruce Sullivan, green building consultant with Earth Advantage Institute. “The added benefit of this course is that it teaches skillful implementation of ductwork that may actually reduce construction costs for builders.”
