Arcosanti is an ecological experiment that began construction in central Arizona in the early 1970s. Italian architect Paolo Soleri designed the project as an exploration of a concept he called "arcology," a marriage of architecture and ecology. Using building materials and techniques that minimize impact on the earth, his goal was to create a town that functioned as a healthy environment for inhabitants as well as for the earth.
