When we first moved to New York and were searching for an apartment, my husband and I looked at a place on the Upper East Side. It was the only residential apartment in a commercial building mostly occupied by doctor's offices and insurance companies. The interior was tiny and ill-cared for, with a crummy galley kitchen. But completely unexpectedly, it had an amazing tree-covered terrace off the bedroom that was almost as big as the interior of the whole apartment. The terrace looked out to the back of a row of brownstones, all private and well-maintained. It was an outdoor lover's dream. We ended up not taking the place for a host of reasons (location, price), but I often think about that terrace and how amazing it must be at this time of year...
