The country’s first national green real estate company is the current next step in promoting green living. This company already exists. It is Green Key Real Estate and is based out of California. They offer residential and commercial buildings for sale that have already incorporated many green standards, they encourage buyers with green incentives and ten percent of their gross commissions go toward greening the homes that they sell.

Sustainable living is not a new practice it has just became a new concept. People think that going green means living in newly designed, state-of-the-art, technologically advanced dwellings. They push new concepts that truly have been around since the beginning of mankind; concepts like recycling, re-using items, renewing materials and solar dependency.

The terminology may have changed, the reasoning may have become more political, and technological advances may have hindered the everyday outlook. If you take a moment to step back and view the whole picture, sustainable living has been a driving force through every generation. It just wasn’t discussed it was the way of life.

Maybe the easiest alternative to green living in today’s society is finding a home that has many of the newest trends, before they were considered cutting-edge, already implemented instead of always building new structures. Many homes that have been around for years have been updated and renovated, to keep energy costs down; they just do not receive the attention that the new designs evoke.

As an everyday consumer, how do you go about finding one of these homes? Some people are lucky and stumble into something innovative, others design their own, and others simply make-do with what is present and affordable.

Architecture and Real Estate are two dynamic markets that are forced in today’s economy to co-exist in the matters of environmentally friendly designs, preservation projects, and renovations. The push from consumers demanding better living and healthier choices have to be faced and met by these two giant industries.

The term that is used to describe Green Key Real Estate’s practice is ‘slow design’ with their unique implementation of reuse as a movement in buildings. They state,

“What distinguishes Green Key agents from the others, what makes us unique, is that our commitment reaches far beyond the typical real estate buying process.

Our value-added expertise as certified Eco-Brokers and green building professionals will put you on the path to a healthier, more efficient and environmentally friendly way of living or will complement the green lifestyle choices you are already making.”

Green Key is a member of Coop America’s Green Business Network and California’s Build It Green. All of their agents are Eco-broker and Green Building Professional certified. These attributes insure that they are practicing what they preach, and being as green of a company as they possibly can.

Just to give you an idea of some of their building listings, here are three of their current ones:

  1. 1994 – Rammed Earth Temescal Bungalow in Oakland, CA with one bedroom + loft, radiant heat with thick walls reduces the energy bill.
  2. 1943 – Holly Vista Way House in Auburn, CA with no home-owner fees, three bedrooms/2 baths.
  3. 5-Acre Homestead at Dry Creek Valley Organic Farm which offers three bedrooms/office/loft/4 baths and a solar-powered geodesic dome and tipi, dry creek flyer.

All of their listings offer unique, already implemented green technologies. Plus for them to offer advice, monetary incentives, and commissions this really is a green company.

As the architecture and real estate markets collide, this greener environment push will be from both sides. To understand this concept and to look at what already exists is mandatory to achieve a better built and living environment for us all. New does not have to be the only answer to green.
