How to Save on Your Energy Bills

The recent hike in energy prices has left many families struggling to keep up with inflated rates for gas and electricity. In extreme cases, people are being forced to choose between eating and heating, as the ‘big six’ energy companies dominate the UK energy market and take their cues from each other when it comes to increasing prices. Whether you’re looking to save on your energy bills or do your bit to protect the environment, cutting consumption of gas and electricity around the home is essential. Follow these simple steps for success.

Changing Your Energy Supplier

If you can get a better deal elsewhere, why stay with the same energy company? Use online price comparison tools to work out whether you could save with a different provider and check whether you’re currently on the cheapest tariff available from your energy supplier. Some people are unwittingly paying more than is necessary.

Appliances and Thermostats

Make sure you switch all your electrical appliances off at the plug when they are not in use. This may seem simple, but so many people neglect to do this and leave televisions and laptops on standby when they head out to work or go to bed in the evening. You can get the kids involved in this too and teach them the importance of saving energy in the home. Don’t leave mobile phone chargers plugged in or stereos on standby and you will see a real difference in your energy bills. Turning down the thermostat by just one degree Celsius can save you around £75 per year in heating bills.

Replacing Light Bulbs

Switching all the light bulbs in your home to energy-saving equivalents can save you over £60 per year in electricity costs. Although energy saving bulbs take longer to reach their full wattage, this can lend a sense of atmosphere to rooms that would benefit from a warmer kind of illumination. Remember that turning off lights when you leave a room will also make a difference to your energy bills and to the environment.

Reducing Draughts

Draught excluders are inexpensive to buy and can be placed in front of outside doors to prevent heat from escaping. Internal wall insulation could save you and your family up to £460 per year, while laying the recommended loft insulation to a thickness of 270mm could save you another £150 per year.
