Regarding advertising posts like metalical's
( http://www.livemodern.com/forums/dwell/materialsmethods/029878333332 ):
This doesn't bother me nearly as much as some posts. At least it's an honest advertisement, not some thinly-veiled testimonial. The fact is, here's a tool that I didn't know about, that seems useful, and that I could believe many other people that read these forums would also find useful. Another fact is that many of the regular posters to the forums also advertise here, or at least use the forums to find potential clients (I'm guitly of at least one count of this). But these are also folks who are active community members, who are usually ready to share their expertise and help out. There seems to be a loose consensus that commercial posts by active members is alright. (But just how active does a forum poster need to be before it's OK to post about their product or service?)
So what's fair? We could have a forum specifically for advertisements, or require ads be restricted to home pages, and shame and/or moderate away commercial posters who post outside the designated place. I doubt Marshall or anyone else has time for that sort of moderation, and those restrictions would really change the tenor of the forums for the people that have been actively using them. (Plus, many advertisers have products or services that are regional in nature, so the regional forums would seem to be a good place to spread the word.) A flagging system like craigslist? That breeds a certain sort of militancy. A rule that topics need to be prefixed with ADV when they are commercial?
I don't know what the right answer is; just throwing some things out there. I'm afraid all of these suggestions kind of get in the way of Marshall's intent for this site, which is to provide not only a little club for DIYers, but also a marketplace for modern design that can help gain converts and improve economies of scale (correct me if I'm wrong).

Officially, the policy at LiveModern is, "You agree to not post
commercial advertisements, except links to your LiveModern home page,
in any public or product forums/blogs/chats on LiveModern." (from the Terms of Use).
But it's quite hard to enforce as there are so many posts. So the
backup is to rely on community standards. If there is a complaint, I
will address it. But usually posters have some sense of boundary, and
are careful to cross it. I try to read most posts, but I also rely on
the actual forum moderators to make a determiniation whether or not a
line has been crossed. All forum moderators have the same tools I
do to retract or delete posts they think have abused the community
standard.
In the future (after the forums are fixed),
we'll develop other tools that will be particularly useful to both
comsumers and producers. For example, a "want ad" feature (free to
buyers, but paid for sellers). But also an advertizement/sponsorship
feature (paid placement). With these in place, we'll have a more
stringent policy for posting commerical content.
I think that having buyers and sellers in the same place is essential
for this site to work. But we also need better tools and better rules
so that it's harder for content to be ingterpreted as spam. That really
does nobody any good.
