This site is still trouble for me? Is it ever going to be fixed?

Posted by tom mot at June 12. 2006

I hate to complain, but this site is still very slow no matter where I'm accessing it from. The pages take forever to load, and half the time when I try to visit one of the forum categories it just sits there loading, only to display a blank page.

Now this happens when I log into the site from the forum:

I enter my username and password and hit enter. Instead of showing me as looged in it returns back to displaying the login boxes with the username box populated with someone else's name. I tried about 3 times in a row with the same result. I began to fear that my account had been hacked, but when I click to visit a specific forum it shows me as logged in. If I return to the forum index page it looks like I'm not logged in and has the other name in the username box.

I find myself visiting this site less and less because it's just frustrating. No longer do I even bother trying to visit some of the forums or read all the threads because I just now it's either going to take ages to load or I'll just get blank pages.

Again, I don't want to sound bitter, but this has gone on for way too long, and at the risk of beating a dead horse, it seems like it would have been so much easier to just switch the site over to an entirely different CMS. Even with the time it would take to convert the data it seems that it could've been done in less time than the year or more that this site has been giving users problems.

It's also extremely frustrating that I cannot edit my own post. I really do hate Plone.

You must have missed the update.

By far the best way to use the site is to not be logged in. The only reason to login is if you want to add content, such as a comment or a forum post. Otherwise, there is no benefit to logging in. You still can see all content. We made this change in December. The site since December has been very fast, in fact extremely fast, except when you are logged in.

When you are logged in, there still is a problem, much as you described. We have commissioned new software (you can see the community appeal here), but are doing it in conjunction with others and it is taking longer than we would like. The new forum software is in alpha testing now, and hopefully will be out in the next month or so. When it is published, we will be doing a complete software overhaul. You will notice a big difference.

Thanks for your patience.

When you are logged in, there is an edit function if you were the original author of a post. Of course, it may take a couple of tries.

FYI, Plone is not the problem, the forum software is the problem (it's not part of the core Plone product). The forum software is what we are upgrading, so that you don't have these problems anymore.

As for migrating this site to a different CMS, I can think of only Drupal that might qualify. But then, moving a gig of data, about 600,000 data objects from about two dozen different content types, seems like a much more daunting and EXPENSIVE task than fixing the forum software and upgrading Plone.
