Issues, Issues, Issues

Posted by Mark Meyer at January 18. 2007

Marshall, et al,

I'm really sad to see how many things we used to have on this site that are no longer there. I can no longer easily see how to edit a post I just made, which is probably the most frustrating thing I can imagine for a site based solely on user content. This needs a readily apparent fix. Maybe it is there, but I sure don't see any way to edit or update a post (note: blog comments always had this problem as well. I'd suggest they need a way to edit as well.)

The post in question didn't parse the HTML I inserted, which I think is WEIRD. I'm sure there is an easy fix for that.

What in god's name happened to the user ability to set up a signature, and all of the readily available user contact info? We used to have the ability to craft our own signatures, links to our websites, as well as readily apparent email links right in our avatar. Now there is nothing but frustrating clicking that leads to a users "profile" that has no useful information about the user whatsoever. This is another problem.

Mark,

You are correct that some of these features have not been implemented yet in the new forum software that we are using. We will be implementing these shortly - starting with better ways of sorting the threads.

The post in question didn't parse the HTML I inserted, which I think is WEIRD. I'm sure there is an easy fix for that.

There is a button that says "HTML" on the toolbar. Did you use this?

Signatures are not implemented yet on this software. However by clicking on the author's name shown right next to the title of the posting, you can visit their home page and have their contact information and such. This is working now.

Marshall will have more to say about this when he is back next week.

Mark,

Editing of forum posts is easy to implement, and it's been on Suresh's list for a while. it will happen next week. We'll also allow you to retract a comment, but not delete it (an administrator can delete it, but you'll have to ask us -- there may be comments associated with it, so it gets a bit tricky).

As for sig files, we could do them but they were so little used that we have not done them yet. Instead, the author link on any post will lead you to the author page, and there you can put bio and link information. That seamed to be the best way to "advertise" you without doing a bunch of coding that so few people used.
