Comment: This place is a little secret. They sell overstocked Interface Flor carpet tiles from $1 - $2.39 each! You have to go often to find something you like. And they don't always have enough. Great place to go if you want to spend some time looking through their hodge podge of stuff.

My fiancee and I just found a store called Metropolitan Modern at 4130 Manchester (downtown just past Kingshighway) where we found a great mid century leather office chair. Anyway, the guy there was very cool and the prices were reasonable. The Future Antiques on Grand is also a good place. Neither of them sell anything new, but most of their stuff is in very good condition and the prices are usually right.

Yeah I need to get a list of all the new stores downtown. They're so new they are not in the phone book and I haven't had a chance to get down to all of them. From what I last heard Kroma reopened a few blocks over but I've never been able to find it.

Both have great pieces, Niche is more furniture while UMA is more design and accessory oriented. UMA carries, BluDot, Chilewich, American Modern in depth as well as a big selection of Jonathan Adler and Babette Holland

I updated the stores with whatever info I could google. I was in downtown this week so I stopped by a few places and picked up bussiness cards to make sure I had the correct info.

We are a new store located at 1113 Locust Street that may be of interest. We combine modern furnishings, custom made (by me) steel furniture and antique pieces to create a very unique look. Downtown is becoming the place for modernists to shop. With the two new stores (Salt of the Earth Blend) opening on Locust and as I read in the paper the other day, UMA expanding onto the corner of Locust 11th, Ambiente on Locust and 10th and Niche on 10th and Wash Ave....who would have thought STL would develop a shopping district in the heart of all that beautiful architecture! I just saw UMA mentioned on one of my favorite design blogs

Has anyone checked out BlueBoat Designs at 16th Wash ave. They have some really hot fixtures and lighting and some unbelievable prices. Kay (I think she is owner/designer) was very helpful and very knowledgable about her merchandise. Check it out! Another great resource for the growing downtown design district!
I hear that they've confirmed an Ikea for 2007 in the Northwest Plaza Mall in St. Ann. It's near the airport which I hear is something they look for and that mall is currently pretty dead right now so rent should be cheap and parking plentiful. I am of the belief that this will help encourage modern furnishing style and tastes and help the downtown stores rather than hurt them. People will start buying at Ikea and move up into the Washington Ave stores as their income increases. I'm certain others disagree, but I think Ikea having faith in this market is a good sign.
I don't see Northwest plaza being a great choice for location? For cheap rent, yeah. I can picture IKEA in Earth City near Dave and Busters or down in Chesterfield valley. But wherever they build it I'll have no problem driving there since I currently drive to Schaumburg Chicago once or twice a year to shop.
I totally agree with the Quack. Having IKEA in St. Louis will bring a new style to St. Louis. Entry level contemporary will breed mid-high end contemporary collectors. Personally I know I am pretty done with the IKEA products and have moved on to better quality. But IKEA was my introduction to contemporary design. YEAH, the lou is stepping up a notch.
As far as NW plaza, good location. Everyone knows how to get there and it is accessible from everywhere.
Time to rid the house of all IKEA items now, as the secret is going to get out!
I'm not embarassed to own IKEA stuff if I know it is of good quality. As far as accessories you can't beat them. Furniture...well...that's a toss up. If you like it and are happy with the quality than that's all that matters. I own several things from IKEA (lighting, area rug, shelves, etc...)and can't say I've ever had a problem with any of it.

Great site! Just wanted to add my two cents and support for two of the stores up there. Metropolitan modern - quirky and *reasonably priced* stuff. As mentioned before the shopowner is very cool. UMA - the best of the downtown stores, IMHO. Did anybody else seen the local news story about the owner. Poor guy gets hit by a city bus! With the settlement money he opens up his own store and names it after his dog who got killed in the accident. I know I sound like I work for these stores, but I really think that these are two locally owned stores that should be supported at all costs. I would be curious for recommendations re: the Cherokee stores if anyone is familiar.
Yeah, my Wife and I were down there yesterday at UMA. Mike (the owner) is a super nice guy. I have yet to visit Metropolitan Modern. The only store I've been to on Cherokee St. is Retro 101. Lots of cool vintage nick nacks and lighting.
oops, we somehow misplaced uma. We were driving around downtown today and saw big signs saying that UMA was reopening march 1 in a new location so we (incorrectly) assumed that it was currently closed. Hopefully, the new digs are a sign that things are going well. One pet peeve about the downtown stores is that they are all closed on sunday (whereas all the cherokee stores were open). I'm sure that they know more about the local shopping trends than I do, but sunday ends up being the most likely window shopping day for us. On a completely different note Wasabi and Kitchen K are some of our favorite new(ish) restaurants downtown.
Yes, UMA is still open. Two or three doors down. Mikes new space will be larger and he'll begin carrying a few pieces of furniture. He showed me the line of furniture he will be carrying and it looks really nice. I agree, it sucks that all the downtown stores are closed on Sunday. Saturday as well for most. And then to top it off, most of them close at 5:00 pm during the week.

I am the owner of The Ambiente Collection. I want to comment on the Saturday Sunday thing. At this point, Sundays are a long way off for most or all of us. As far as Saturdays are concerned, I am pretty sure that we are all open. Some close at 3:00, but most are open 'till 5 or 6. Heck, I think Gil over at Macro Sun is open until 8 or 9 on Saturdays. But he is surrounded by Restaraunts sells clothing as well as accessories.
We are open 10-6 Monday thru Saturday. Casa Semplice, housewares, is on my mezzanine area, but he's moving to a larger location real soon!
I am at work every day by 8:15-ish or so. So...if any of you boys girls need to come to me that early, just let me know!

Of course it's good to see this sort of thing in St. Louis. Nice to have a place for the local modernistas to trade secrets. And its good now and then to be reminded that not everybody in this city has their head in the sand. Slowly but surely...
Great shop list so far. I'll rack my brain of my usual routes and add more if I can think of things that are missing.
