Everything Old New Again

Posted by Michael T at March 29. 2005

I'm selling my Mid-Century Modern home. See pics at:

http://home.earthlink.net/~auburnmodern/

I just couldn't bring myself to do major updates. There are so many original features that nobody has screwed up fo the past 50 years. Now I'm looking to put an addition on a contemporary home in Kent, WA. Has anybody worked with any local architects doing modern? There are some architects whose work I've liked but their references weren't very good. I need good design but I also need someone who can get it built on time and on budget. Any info or insights appreciated.

Beautiful home. My wife and I wish we lived on that coast!!! We'd snap it up NOW! Best of luck, although I'm sure you won't need it. Just out of curiosity, what sort of things did you feel needed to be done to the house? I'm interested in what issues one encounters with a home like that.

Finding people to work on the house was difficult. Most trades are only used to doing newer houses and few have any aesthetic sense. When we were replacing a window, several glass shops tried to sell us divided lights. They were in the house looking at its style and they just didn't get it. Cable and TV installers get confused by all the glass. Where do they run the cables? Most of the upkeep and maintenance I've done myself, but occasionally something comes up and you'd better be home and show them and then watch them to make sure they don't screw up.

I've been in the trades and hate people watching over me but a house like this needs more oversight. With all the new construction locally here few trades get much work repairing versus installing.

I would have liked a bigger kitchen. There is really no way to do that and keep the integrity of the house.

Cycling coach,

I am a design/builder in Seattle, and we definitely do modern. I am designing a house right now that is very similar structurally to your existing one. Check out the link:

I just tried to post an updated picture, but am having problems with the LiveModern server.

From our website, www.cast-db.com, you can look at a much broader portfolio. We specialize in renovations to urban houses and would love to work on another contemporary addition. Drop me a line at
