Mado House, NE Portland

Posted by Kristi Madden at May 23. 2006

Hey Portlanders. Would like to hear opinions of the newly built townhomes, Mado House, developed by Sakura Urban Concepts in cooperation with local architect David Spitzer. The four units are located in the Eliot neighborhood (some call it West Irvington) at NE Brazee between MLK and 7th.

Well, good intentions but bad construction. The wood sheeting on the exterior is punctured by nails (in the northwest??) so leakage is inevitable.
The interior space is vertical and a bit tight and choppy. Kitchen by Ikea (yes, Ikea, they didn't even take the name out of the drawers).
A little too pricey for faulty construction and an Ikea kitchen.

I've only seen the exterior, but they're generally pretty nice looking. Not too sure about the really shiny dark wood and the strange 'cap' running around the roof, but heck, i applaud all modern development in portland if it's built well.

It looks great, really beautiful and a great addition to the neighborhood, until you get close to it. The construction of the skin looks like a lawsuit in the making. Was a waterproofing consultant used? Did anybody supervise the flashing installation? From the ground I could see half a dozen places where water intrusion looked likely to happen, and I doubt that any kind of rain screen was used. I'd be surprised if one of the owners hasn't already threatened a construction defect lawsuit.
