Ways to recycle packaging foam?

Posted by Nick Thompson at September 26. 2006

Is there a cheap way to recycle packaging foam - you know, the common white pieces that usually come in computer boxes, TV Boxes, etc.? I work at a facility that puts machines together that are packed with this stuff - and right now we just throw it away. Would it make a good insulative material to infill cavities with in walls (to replace fiberglass batting) ???

Anyone got any ideas?

No one has any ideas?

What about if the blocks are chopped up into mini pieces (if you look at styrofoam closely you will see its made up of little balls) and blown in like cellulose insulation?

There is a really cool book that just came out called "Cool Green Stuff" by Dave Evans. This book is mainly photos of recycled items turned into furniture, etc. In it, they show a company that makes lamps out of recycled foam packaging. I assume the place an LED in the center (so it stays cool), and the foam glows. It looked pretty sweet, I may try it and see how it goes.
