quot;greenquot; (OK, blue) insulation

Posted by Rob Batey at July 03. 2005

Hi all,

Surprisingly I hadn't seen a post about this, so I thought I'd share - some friends just put an addition on their house, and found the following as an alternative to fiberglass insulation. It's made of recycled reclaimed cotton (a new home for your Levi's... literally!). It's a tad more expensive, but the R values compare, and the sound dampening qualities are exceptional... and of course, it's recycled AND recyclable, unlike fiberglass. It comes in both 16 24 inch widths.

(On another recycle/reuse note: The reason I was investigating this product was due to a remodel/replacement requirement - I *just* got lucky in managing to find a new home for about 200 sq ft of fiberglass insulation pulled out of my house when I got rid of the suspended ceilings (NOT the kind of industrial look I favor!!) I highly recommend making use of resources like local recycling organizations and especially craigslist.org if you're lucky enough to live in an area that has a local site! It took a couple of repeat postings before I got a taker, but it was worth it on so many levels. Now just waiting on someone else to pick up the ceiling tiles rails!)
