There are ridge vents that are claimed to be snow proof or at least snow resistant. I'm not aware of any third-party tests, however.

The problem with the gable vents is that they apparently don't draw very well, so you end up needing a relatively huge gable vent to work as well as a small ridge vent.

The real solution is to mandate shed roofs on all new construction. ;)

I've seen knucklehead roofers put felt right over the vent slot at the top of the roof sheathing. :wacko:
