another nc modernist here. i'm a few weeks away from breaking ground on a new construction modern home in the suburbs of charlotte. I've been working
in the custom building industry for the past 5 years and i have become very frustated with the mcmansions I see everywhere, even in the custom market. i find it hard to believe that other people in the southeast aren't ready for something different.

Congratulations on your pending modern project. I hope it goes smoothly for you. My husband and I considered doing the same, but we decided to purchase an existing home after looking for a mod within our price-range for over a year and a half. We got a 60s ranch that looks quite traditional from the front, but the inside and back is very open and mod-friendly. We are planning on subduing and streamlining the front elevation a bit just to make it ours and ease-up on the traditional character of the house. Our trade-off for a great interior and backside was a more-traditional-than-we-wanted-front-end. Oh well...that's the way it goes in Charlotte, NC!

I feel ya on the McMansions. Big time. It's absolutely miserable around here. Thank goodness for the few brave souls like you.

I know I'm a little late, but better late than never. We are in the early stages of building a modern home in Durham. We are looking for a architect to helps us make our 1700-2000 sq/ft 3-4 bedroom 2.5-3.5 bathroom home a reality with a reasonable ( mid to upper $200, land not included) price tag.

I'm so pleased to have found this site/forum- I'm gearing up to relo from LA to Charlotte next week, and am glad to know what I'm up against in my quest for non-traditional/McMansion homes. Don't get me wrong, I love the traditional homes that have stood the test of time, but I just don't get the rest of it. After living in LA for 5 years, it's going to be very hard to leave the wonderful architectural diversity.

Very interesting reading here- thanks.

Any tips/advice/neighborhood/furniture advice for me re: the Charlotte area, I welcome!

Sheila

Greetings, I share everyone's sentiment here who is excited to find that there are others in North Carolina who appreciate Design from a Modern perspective.  Sometimes it can be so disheartening to read in Modern design publications about all the inspiring things going on, but it's always out West or, at best, up North.  I know there are architecture firms in NC that do wonderful Modern design, but either they don't get any press or the commissions are for distant locales.  The most promising news I had heard yet (and now this was already a couple of years ago) was the Dwell home in Pittsboro.  And how about furniture?  North Carolina is a giant in the industry, but they don't come close to the amazing work coming out of places like San Francisco and Brooklyn.

Now don't misunderstand me, I'm am a true optimist.  I voice this little spat of negativity only in hopes of drawing out anyone who might be able to prove me wrong or at least offer a glimmer of hope.  The best to you all.  I hope this discussion continues with great energy.

Hey Shelia,

my husband and I are thinking of moving from LA to Charlotte.  Not an easy decision - he is born and raised here - I have been here for 15 years... but cost of living is just too crazy for what you get. AND my parent live about and hour from Charlotte, and we intend on having children soon.  Is charlotte horrible ??

Welcome to the North Carolina LiveModern forum. Thanks to Marshall for giving us this spot. I am absolutely sure there are a few folks throughout NC who are interested in modern design, whether it be housing, furniture, or anything which means cool to you. I encourage you to share ideas/ info about anything modern you think others should know about.
Have fun!
Austin

Hey Shelia,

I'm new to this site so I'm just now reading your comments about moving to Charlotte, NC.  Hope you haven't settled on a McMansion in South Charlotte.  My wife and I are beginning the process of getting our house ready to sell.  It's a 1960 architect built mid century modern.  It really is one of the nicest and coolest houses out there.  We just finished adding 1500 feet and are now designing and implementing landscape designs.  Please give me a shout if you'd like photos.  you'll love this house.  Thanks.  Mike

We are an early-warning system for endangered houses, an exclusive source for exciting modernist house tours, an extensive catalog of North Carolina and national residential architecture, and a community of knowledgeable advocates for modernist construction. I hope you'll come by and visit - www.trianglemodernisthouses.com. Thanks, George Smart Executive Director
