A-Frame in Charlotte Area

Posted by Seth Brundle at December 11. 2008
No, I can't possibly afford modernist pre-fab. No, I can't possibly afford an MCM. What I might be able to afford is to buy or (maybe) build an A-Frame. Until recently, I hadn't thought of A-Frames as modernist, but compared to the oddly anachronistic obscenities they've been building the last eight years, A-Frames seem positively futuro. They must be the simplest house in terms of construction. And, properly insulated, eco-friendly. What I'd really like is to buy an existing A-Frame, but they only seem available out in the mountains. As far as building one, the non-corporate builders in the area seem to specialize in "Custom" homes - as in "finely appointed luxury homes designed for only the most discerning pea-brains who are completely culturally illiterate and financially naive". Or something. In other words - McMansions on steroids, if such a thing is possible. 1>Does anyone know if there are any A-Frame "kits"? There used to be - a long time ago. 2>Does anyone know a builder in the Charlotte area willing to build an A-Frame under 100K (not including land)? Maybe someone who more typically builds decks, or something?

"I'm looking for housing that is affordable, and modern. I know there must be innovative, well-designed housing out there. I just can't seem to find it!" —Tracey R., from the Dwell discussion board
