Deck over living space?

Anyone have thoughts or experiences to share regarding the detailing of decks over living space?
I'm trying to keep the system fairly shallow, but it must also be insulated. (I'm planning to use rigid insulation, maybe tapered.)
I'm sure I can do this if I treat it like a flat roof with a duckboard deck resting on top, but ideally I'd find a material which can double as the waterproof membrane AND the walking surface.
Thanks in advance,
JB
I'll keep you posted, as I'm going to have first hand experience with exactly what you describe shortly. Decking the roof isn't going to be first on the to-do list after we get occupancy but I know I'll want to use the deck so it's going to be put to the test to some extent. I'll have PVC membrane over 10 of rigid, tapered insulation.
Wow, 10 of Rigid! That should get you to R-50 at least.
Please keep us up to date with any fresh ideas.
My latest idea for the deck is to use these paver pedestalsand finish the deck with stone tiles.
I've looked at some membranes which are also the walking surface, but they are much too institutional looking for this project.
Cheers,
JB
This looks easy - but will it work? This was a suggested application on the pavel site. Lets say SIP or Treated ply sheathing on a 1/4" per ft slope + membrane + pedestal + paver.
I am not up on my condensation or thermodynamics but isnt this super easy? Will it work?
If you wanted to go another step, could you put a moisture barrier between the membrane and sheathing?
I wasnt considering a roof deck because of complication but if this will work, I might be into it.
I had a sales rep in this morning that showed me a product that forms a roof membrane and the walking surface in one multi-coat system that is only about 1/4 - 3/8 thick and can go directly over a plywood deck. Its an acrylic system. The first layer is an expanded metal mesh that gets stapled down, then a rough acrylic modified cementitious base coat, then a fiber reinforced membrane, and then colored wear top coats go over that.
