Eucalyptus hardwood floors

Posted by Jim Meehan at February 28. 2006

We visited the new de Young museum in San Francisco this past weekend. I'll leave discussion of the building itself for another time, but we did notice the gorgeous hardwood floors throughout most of the museum. I didn't recognize the wood, so I asked at the info desk, and was very surprised to hear that it's eucalyptus!

There's lots of eucalyptus growing in and around the SF bay area. It's a non-native invasive species and displaces natives like coast live oak, bay laurel, and madrone. So I was delighted to discover that there are several local producers who mill green waste eucalyptus (from golf courses, municipalities, park districts, etc) into eucalyptus flooring! And for prices that are quite reasonable. Under $4 per sq. ft. for 3/4 unfinished TG flooring. It's also very hard (70% harder than oak), so it should last a long time.

I think we're definitely going to pursue eucalyptus flooring for our new home. Anyone have experience with it?
