I just finished doing a new roof on a famous modern building in LA that is also a historical monument. We used a thermo-plastic membrane roof by Sarnafil. This is a great application for a flat roof and it is definately a superior product for the situation. Email me if you'd like more info on the product specifications and the details we used for flashing the differing conditions. This is really a commercial roofing application and most residential only roofers don't use it.

If you are concerned about the environment stay away from PVC materials, in looking at the site for Sarnafil most of their roofing is PVC based. EPDM can also be had in white and can be adhered to a plywood or foam deck using water based adhesives which allow for repositioning and a fairly easy installation.
