Flush Garage Door

Posted by Christopher Corbett at July 21. 2005

I am trying to find a garage door that can be mounted flush to the exterior wall so that when it is closed it practically disappears into the facade. It would also be nice if I could clad it with siding to match the rest of the house. I have done little research but some of the bi-fold doors seem promising.
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
Thanks.
Chris

I think a bifold door or something conceptually equivalent (quadrifold?) would be the only viable choice. A one-piece door would have serious clearance problems at the top, and a roll-up door would have to have a pretty complicated mechanism at the top to prevent a door/building collision.

I'm still trying to figure out what a cross section of human skin has to do with garage doors....

Bi or quad fold door look like a pain and I think that unless you spend a fortune you would end up with something that works like a cheap closet door. I don’t think it would be that hard to use a standard door and hardware but with a few additions and changes to way the door is mounted. Instead of positioning the door so it sits against the inside of the wall size it so it sits inside the opening flush with the exterior. So that the door doesn’t have to have oversized brackets for the rollers reaching all the way back to the standard rail position I’d router groves in the door frame to accept the rails. For the top you would have to fabricate a hinged bracket so it works something like a sunroof pushing the last panel into place but nothing too complicated. It would take a little extra thought but not a lot of extra money. Good luck!
