ok i have an old formica counter top. it its very ugly... i want something nifty... so i have went round and round trying to think up something.... i was thinking of tiling it with granite, or some kind of stone, but that would just look like everything else. also thought about resurfacing it with new formica.
or reglazing it.
so i am walking through lowes paint dept. and i seen garage floor paint kit.
its an env. safe waterbased epoxy and it has speckles in it that you put onto the paint. has anyone else ever used this.... the more i thought about it, the more i liked the idea. i think its going to look really cool.
i will post pics after its done...
thanks

AFIK, the speckles are grit to make it non-slip, so the end product is probably going to be somewhat rough.
Are you going to put it directly over the formica or a different substrate? How are you going to prep the surface?
I've played around with liquid epoxy a fair bit, albeit not the product you are talking about. I've found that it tends to lift if any moisture at all gets under it, particularly if it's applied over a surface without much tooth.
Sounds like an interesting idea. Looking forward to pics!
I used a metallic copper paint on my formica countertop. Primed it and painted on metallic copper paint w/ a squiggle pattern w/ the brush. Put a few coats of poly on top and it turned out great.
You could always use concrete!
Not only is it eco-friendly, it is the true anti-granite. No one can ever say that they have the exact same countertops as you! We can create countertops per your spec's and ship nationwide.

I'm going to do concrete myself but here are a few ideas. Wrap it with stainless steel or plain steel with a polyurathane finish so it doesn't rust.
Paint the bottom and then use clear glass ontop and it will make the color look super glossy. Use frosted glass.
You could always take the counter top to a truck bed liner place and have them coat it. You may even be able to get them to come to your house and spray it in place. That stuff is undestructable.
I used the epoxy stuff in my garage before and it doesn't like heat at all. A hot pot would ruin it.
What about going to a metal scrap yard and looking through the aluminum dumpster. I found 80 12x16 identical squares that I'm going to use to tile a wall for $80. You can also get 4'x8' sheets of metal that have had machine parts stamped out of them and then grout in the holes.
Or you could put tile backer ontop and use wood around the edges and have it stick up 1 above the top edge. Then fill the top of the counter with river rocks and then use 500 PSI concrete as grout.
