Epoxy Flooring

Posted by Eric Papachristos at January 18. 2006

I am converting my current loft into a modern type living space. I have been consumed with many articles and magazines for design inspiration. In regard to flooring, I keep seeing this common denominator - white - porcelein like floors (picture attached). Does anyone know how to achieve a floor like this? or what material it's made out of?

thanks,
eric

eric,

i love those floors too..but i think those specific ones are probably digitally altered since it looks like it's an advertisement for sofa in the pic?

here are some pics from the lymm water tower house in london which has some epoxy resin floors in certain areas, my guess is it needs to be poured vs. the tiled ones in your pic:

For my next home, i definitely want to do some floors like the ones in your picture...or some nice acid stained concrete such as this art gallery in dallas - Goss Gallery

I've seen epoxy floors in retail and residential/loft type spaces. They are very cool and durable but do tend to wear in- showing off the main traffic routes especially.
You can google epoxy flooring and find a number of products and suppliers. Typically te people who do such things do garage floors and the like- but will easily be able to help you out.

Your super sexy photo is most likely a white porcelain tile (as opposd to a glazed ceramic tile). The best in the world (and relatively easy to find and suprisingly not too too expensive) is fiandre:

they have a number of whites but this one(which is a 60x60cm (23.625x23.625)

would give a look like your photo and would be quite indestructible.

if you want even sexier (and accordingly exotic prices) you could get white glass floors through dupont's laminated safety glass. that would really free up any limitations...

That is certainly a tiled floor. If you have a concrete sub floor you could give it the effect by scoring the concrete and then putting epoxy down. If your floors have any sort of finish it will need to be acid etched to prep the floor for the epoxy. Putting down an epoxy paint looks great, but having a solid color with no variation shows EVERYTHING! One more issue would be the high gloss look. When I put down epoxy in my last room I wasn't able to achieve the high gloss look. In order to achieve that you might want to consider a polyurethane topcoat. I also had a friend that used wood lacquer and buffed the hell out of it and it looked AMAZING.

Hope this is of some help...

Justin
