Building Windows from Scratch....

Posted by Mod House at September 11. 2005

Does anyone know of a good book on building windows?

I have two houses to remodel in the next two months or so. One is a MC Ranch, the other is MCM. I want to do something different for the windows.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank You

Hi,

I don't know of any books, but here is something I am considering doing.

For large, fixed windows, sliding glass door replacement glass is relatively cheap, double pane, and readily available. They can be mounted in a wood jamb with some wooden stops, and then sealed.

They could be mounted in conjunction with some operable windows for ventilation. The only downside I can see is that the exterior wood will have to be maintained.

Working Windows: A Guide to the Repair and Restoration of Wood Windows (Paperback)
by Terry Meany

Good reference for double-hung windows. Though repair/restoration heavy, in-depth enough to suss out the important details to build from scratch.

Thanks for the help.

I also found, [em]Windows and Skylights[/em] (Taunton), on Amazon.

But please avoid mahogany, as it's now coming from Peru and mostly illegally logged. One of the biggest window manufacturers in the US is using massive amounts of mahogany and it's always been a popular wood for windows.
