Modern Wall

Posted by Matthew Perito at August 02. 2006

I am about to start a remodel of a 1950's modern by Benjamin Thompson. I saw this picture of a wall and loved it. Does anyone have any idea how to go about creating something like this? What material do you think is used for the panels? What type of hardware could be used to set the panels away from the wall?

Sorry, I can't help you much in figuring out how to replicate it, but I just had to say

Wow!

I love it.

I'd be very cautious about lighting the space in order to get the same shadow effect and the scale of the relief to match the size of the wall.

It's actually quite simple the wall panels are mounted on small boxes mounted to the wall the trick comes in from laying out the actually pattern I'll see if I can draw something up as an example

Fuel:

I would appreciate any help you could provide. It is such an elegant look. I am surprised it would be so simple. It almost looks like the panels are floating. I would assume they are attached with some sort of spacers, but I could be wrong. What material do you think they are made from? Wood? Drywall?

not the same but similar

PeritoMT,

if you are not into engineering it yourself.

this places offers an application to give your walls some detail and dimension. you could of course install them in a grid pattern. that would cost less too.

fue123 has the right idea.

I would do the same mdf boxes. If you need a fastener use z-clips

This is a favorite in the high end millwork idustry to hang paneling etc.
Use them and you could remove and re-arange the boxes very easily when you get bored with the layout.

this is a quick and easy plan if you can't understand it I will try a more detailed one. I may be doing a wall like this in my bedroom we are looking for something different. I was also thinking of placing low voltage lighting behind some of the boxes.

let me know what you think

Thank you for all of the great ideas. I think I will take both of your ideas and use the MDF 5/4's for board A and mount the Z clip to Board A. Then attached Board B (MDF 1/2) to Board A. I would assume it would be best to glue Board A to Board B? Or screws that wont go all the way through Board B. Thanks again for all of your help. I really appreciate it.

Although perhaps not as elegant, thought I would throw out another option for anyone who come across the thread in the future.

DAYORIS Group provides different types of wall paneling systems in different options, available in wood designs or solid color designs

We specialize in design and manufacture of modern wall paneling systems, that are affordable, fast to receive, and easy to install. Our mission was to "standardize" the idea of time consuming carpentry work, by providing an outstanding quality product as well. When we started the concept, our contemporary wall panels were available only in a couple colors, and if you wanted to order, you had to call, and wait for someone to send you an estimate. This was still against the idea of "easy to buy" wall panels products, so we decided to move forward, and prepare all the options possible, including a patent pending installation process, so clients, architect, designers, builders, can easily order and install these wood wall panels.
