Better HVAC Vents

Posted by Eddie Bowers at October 07. 2005

I'm not sure what you call them. (Vents, Registers, Grills?), but it's where the air comes out :)

The stock ones I have create two problems. They are ugly and the damper also changes the direction of the air flow (stupid stupid design).
I'm looking for something simple and modern looking that allows me to control the air flow direction and control how much air is comming out independantly.

The funny thing is that all of my old vents in the house (vintage 1950's)allow this kind of control, but the new kitchen area which has exposed ductwork I need something new (I wish the old ones would fit) but with the same control.

Anyone have some ideas?

Those a cool, but won't work for me. I'm pretty much stuck with the standard rectangular vent size I already have.

The nozzles come in pairs mounted to a rectangular plate that fit over standard size rectangular openings. Download the catalog and take a look. I'm quite sure you can pop them on to any duct opening.

Grandin Road, a catalogue for swanky and not necessarily modern house stuff, just arrived in my mailbox. They have satin nickel Contemporary Registers. Check the right side of the page. They are solid brass and run from $39 - $44 each depending on size. Seems a bit expensive considering you could need lots of them, but might be worth a look.

What you find in commercial buildings are way cooler and more modern-looking than for homes, but I imagine they are NOT cheap.

Good listing of various companies.

Hey Greg,
i justed wanted to compliment you on your endless supply of knowledge and resources! You are an amazing filing cabinet of some of the coolest stuff, how do you keep track of all of this. I am really knocked out by the registers from Seiho you recommended, very cool stuff. I have a very low ceiling in my house and was told it would be a bear to run ducts through it, but on a recent episode of TOH they showcased some high velocity ducting, it's smaller then normal and I think it would be great with these techy registers. thanks again.

How do I do it? My brain is full.

Those high velocity systems usually have their own registers that are pretty discrete. The Seihos are great for eliminating ductwork because they will long-throw the air across a room. You don't need to run the ducts everywhere because you can shoot the air to a far wall. Great for airconditioning, but can feel drafty with heat.
