tread material

Posted by Dan Vargas at July 21. 2007

Has anyone ever used cork on stair treads before?  Kind of like ..cork tiles?  Or maybe some other material?  I imagine there must be some code issues around this.  It came to mind because of the slipperiness and loudness of the hardwooded stairs our friends recently installed in their house.  I was also thinking it could look more interesting on a staircase that was the focal points of several rooms.

They may wear faster than they would on a floor. You could try it, but you have to have something sturdier on the nosing - either hardwood or an aluminum trim piece.

I used Biofiber Wheat composite board on my stairs, adjacent to my cork floor.  Biofiber wheat comes in 4'x8' sheets and is harder than douglas fir.  I used it for the entire stair - tread and riser, but it could be easily used for just the nosing.  It is machinable, stainable and relatively inexpensive.

Many assume its cork while walking up my stairs.

Greg - that could look kind of nice with the alum trim.

Jon - thanks for the pics!  I'll look into to this option as well.  I'm hoping to have open risers, so we'll see what we can come up with!
