Examples of translucent walls / fence for privacy in exterior courtyard

Posted by sticklez at September 09. 2007

I am building a simple courtyard off a bedroom in my house- the bedroom has sliding glass doors, and we hate always keeping the drapes closed- I’m going just make a private deck of it so we can leave it more open. I’ll probably just use deck wood for the floors, but I’d like something translucent for the 6 feet walls so light still gets in (this room is generally dark already).

I picture I can probably use a polycarbonate or something similar for the walls (although up for hearing any suggestions), the thing I’m more stuck on is the visual style of how it could look- I am just having a hard time designing it.  Has anyone seen something like this, and have any example pictures to point to?

Here's an idea that may work. I built these for my driveway, it would be simple to adapt the design for a wall.

Wow those are cool! What brand / make of translucent material is that? Is it on both sides of the framing or just one? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, glad you like the gates. The specific material I used is now hard to find, but a good substitute would be this stuff called "lascolite". It is a fiberglass sheet product. As for the gates, the fiberglass is only on one side, though you could do both side for a finished look from both perpectives. -R.

I think these plastic things end up looking grotty. Better to do it the Japanese way and use a screen of closely placed wooden or better yet aluminum slats. Another trick is to use expanded metal painted white or galvanized. It has the strange quality of being like a two-way mirror--the lighted side is opaque while the dark side is transparent.

Those are really nice! The landscaping is great as well ...

In the pictures it looks like the sun reflects a lot light back in the metal, but I'm afraid they would just be dark in my house, as they are under an awning and would be on the wrong side of the sun.
