White gravel stone used in landscaping

We are trying to decide if we need a landscape architect for our project or not, or if it's something we do later. We love the look of the small white stones used in Japanese and modern landscaping. We would like to use this at areas where our scuppers flow water onto the yard. How thick is a stone bed ? Do you line the bed with a mesh fabric to help water flow through but keep the stone from discoloring from the soil? Any landscaping ideas out there? Great photos of projects? How to install a well designed and well drained rock bed?

I used lanscape cloth under my stone (crushed granite) and placed the stone an average of 2-3 inches thick. It works well and the cloth blocks weeds from growing through the rocks yet still lets water permiate though.

I dig the crushed granite, it is availible in an array of sizes and colors and has a great modern look to it. It is not cheap but is a good permenant solution, unlike bark or mulch which must be replaces every year or so.
