Floors and doors matching?

Posted by Franco Vogt at April 09. 2007
I also posted this on the furnishings forum but maybe this is a better place. We are in the middle of a full renovation and are installing new BR-111 floors. The floor is their Maduro Chestnut, very dark espresso color. The big question is, the floors and the new windows. The windows are bare pine right now and the doors are bare birch, the big issue is do I stain all the wood work to the darkness of the floors? I really like the look of very dark doors, but as anyone who has tried staining 3 different types of wood to match in color, it is hard to say the least. Any words of wisdom out there? Thanks F

Aside from the difficulty to stain different types of wood the same color, it is a matter of taste. I personally don't like homes with too much dark wood, whereas other people do. The overall effect also depends on the additional colors of furniture, walls, etc.

When a problem like this arises, I take a photo of the area in question, add colors with "PhotoShop" and save several color schemes to compare. This is a simple method that helps me a lot and often leads to surprising solutions.
