How do you detail exposed ductwork hangers?

Posted by Jeffrey Rous at September 09. 2007

We have exposed HVAC ductwork on the second floor of our house. The contractors hung the duct with a standard metal strap which loops around the duct and then extends up to the ceiling where it is screwed in to the ceiling with a single screw. It looks kind of cheap and insubstantial. Any suggestions? The ceiling will eventually have GWB covering it, so I assume the drywall crew will undo the screws, put up the GWB and then reattach it.

I prefer to use allthread attached to an angle, which is in turn attached to a strap bent all the way around the duct.

In our office we used a threaded rod which passes all the way through the duct and is held in place with washers and bolts. The rods are near the duct joints so these hangers could be installed as they progressed with easy access. The rods mess with the air flow a little but not much. At the top they pass through blocking between the framing and are held in place with bolts in a similar way and they drywalled right around the rod. It looks pretty clean this way.

Thanks for the ideas. I still need to find a way to connect the hangers to the roof panels. The only structure is the 18 gauge skin of the roof panels.
