Modernist Wood Gates

Posted by Tito Melega at July 12. 2005

Hello everyone,

I just purchased a small house in the West LA area and my first order of business is to install the pathway gates on both sides.

I want the gates to be modern and minimalistic. I am thinking wood to keep things warm. I'll appreciate any reference shots that anyone can send me.

thank you.

It may help to know if you are looking for pre built gates or if you just need design ideas to build your own. Or maybe both?

I think that I'm looking for good examples of minimalistic wood gates so I can have my own built.

Thanks for the reply.

Layka -
Drive down to Venice and in between Venice Blvd. on the south and Rose Av. on the north, Abbott Kinney on the west and Lincoln on the east - there are a TON of cool minimalist gates and fences in there. These folks have built up a pretty cool modern landscape aesthetic in there. Check it out.

Take Pictures and share them with us. I'm looking for the same thing. A neighbor has a gate system covered with tin roof that looks pretty good, I'll get a picture of that one and post as soon as I can.

><br>Here are some that I made for my house. I feel a little self-conscious putting the pic up here, as I just build for me what I like (with approval from my wife, of course). But I think that they are modernist, and maybe they'll inspire an idea for your gates.

richierod:
what is the paterial you used for the screen? it looks like opaque plexi but is it? I am looking at creating something similar but not as a gate but for a sliding panel screen for a window in our bedroom on the lower floor of the house. i apprecaite any info you can share.

It is clear plexiglass. I found this stuff through an architect friend of mine. Had seen it on a few gates and fences in Venice. It comes in 4x8 sheets, and rolls of, I think, 4x40. The place where I got it here in LA has since gone out of business. Here is Stabilit America's website: http://www.glasteel.com/home.htm I didn't find it all that helpful, you should try to find a retailer. And here is a shot of the label. And if you are in LA, and need something with more rigidity than this - like plexi - Hastings plastics in Santa Monica has all kinds of cool stuff. -R.

Aaaaaaack! I meant to say it is clear fiberglass.....

In case someone finds this thread and didn't find the product by Stabilit, I have found a more readily available product: Lascolite. It comes in 4'x 8' sheets and 4' x 50' rolls. Again, Hastings in Santa monica has the stuff, but if you are out of the area, a Google search will do just fine... -R.
