Remodeling blog

Posted by Michael Morrison at March 24. 2005

Hi, all. My partner and I are remodeling an old power plant into a home and studio. We are both big fans of modern design (and avid readers of Dwell!), so I thought some forums members might be interested in seeing our progress. I hope to post an obscene amount of photographs and plans and details about where we buy everything, down to the cabinet hardware, so if you're nosy, like myself, you might enjoy it. The site is at: http://618lincoln.com/ Cheers.

Remodeling is a bit of an understatement here! This looks like a great project.

I can't wait to see the progress!

Holy Mackerel! You've got some serious huevos to take on this project. Very, very cool! That's great that the city is helping out a bit. Hopefully they won't drag on their work too long.

There's an old train station sitting in an industrial area in North Portland that my wife and I have often dreamt of rescuing. It's slowing dying. It would be a titanic undertaking though.

That place will be huge. Do you have any floor plans yet for the interior? I'd love to see them.

We do have floor plans, but I haven't been able to scan them or export them in a picture-friendly format yet. I'm working on it, though.

Thought I'd bump this because the demolition pictures are too cool not to show off. ;)

That'll be a great space when you have it done! I admire your ambition to take on something like this.

Oh, if you have cats, I wouldn't recommend using the horn for a doorbell. It will scare the bejesus out of them when it sounds. I'm speaking from how one of my cats reacted to it! I have a buzzer type doorbell that I put heavy rubber bands on to quiet down after having my lap clawed into when they would leap off on hearing the buzzer.

Just wanted to bump this back up to the top. These guys are making good progress on a huge project.

We're done! Well, with our living side, and although I'm sure this will be a continual process and we'll never be completely finished, we were able to host our first large party this weekend. Updated pictures are at my blog (618lincoln.com/), but here's a quick preview of one of the before and after pictures I uploaded yesterday:

Congrats - what an amazing job! What is the plan for the other side? Art studio of some sort?

Greg,

Yeah, we'll put some sort of studio/workshop on the other side. Of course, we'll have space left over since that side is about 1.5 times the size of our living space...I'm hoping the right idea strikes us when we finally have to make a decision about what to do.
