We are looking to install a new firplace. Because of regulations in this area we cannot use wood burning. We prefer to use a euro look when it is taller than wider and refuse to use those fake logs (maybe some round fireplace balls or broken glass would work well). The purpose is for atmosphere not heat. So far the best I have seen are from DRU (Netherlands) but I do not believe they sell in the US. In fact, I haven't found any clue that they do (I called there office in NL to no avail).
Here are a couple of images of the fireplaces that we like:

Does anyone know of any other manufacturers available in the US that has fireplaces like this? Can anyone recommend a fireplace that has a contemporary feel to it?

Hey Guy,
I was looking at fireplaces last night:
http://www.homeportfolio.com/ They have a few nice ones. Perhaps if you go through a company like Sonoma Cast Stone you could even design your own.

thanks for the replies but the problem is this is a new construction and wood burning is not allowed (no inserts or traditional fireplaces). Our county is very strict about this. We need to look at a gas fireplace preferably with direct vent option. Any other ideas?

There was a post on this topic recently. Someone had recommended www.europeanhome.com as a source. Looks really good.
Well, seems like I am not the only one having troubles finding anything half way decent that is approved for use in the US. I have found the following two gas fireplaces that might work:
http://www.homefiresusa.com/contemporary_Fusion.asp
http://www.raiswittus.com/
RAIS has one gas model
Now - you will probably like some of these - but as I learned the hard way - they are not approved to be used in the US :

Good luck.

Have you seen the Cyclone by Heat Glo?

Or the custom Cyclone:
