Steel rooftop trellis

Posted by Tim Johnsson at November 21. 2005

I'm looking for a modern trellis system using steel or aluminum beams. I plan to mount solar photovoltaic modules to a framing system which will mount to the trellis. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Have you considered using any of the handrail systems out there?

for example:

i used the speed-rail system with copper pipe for a handrail but there is no reason that it couldnt have been used with copper (or any other tubing) for a trellis.

good luck!

Unfortunately the railing needs to be strong enough to support the solar panels (essentially another roof over the rooftop). I'm looking for some type of modern commercially available erector set of sorts that can be installed over an existing rooftop that acts as a trellis strong enough to support solar electric modules and the windloads associated with them.

you could try one of the commercially available aluminum framing systems. There are several manufacturers. Do a google search for Bosch aluminum framing.
