Rejuvenate old kitchen cupboards

Hi, I've just found a bargain series of kitchen cupboards which I want to install in a small lake house. They're old, and not of any particular value, and I wouldn't mind give them a more modern twist, for example painting them in some bright colour. The cupboards seem not to be made of wood but of some sort of acrylic texture, have you got any suggestion on how I could treat them?
