ABOUT DAVID PAUL SEYMOUR:
“I love to create art that looks as if it’s a still from the opening credits to some old movie or television show like Pink Panther or Bewitched. I strive to create
work that is vivid, modern and instantly iconic. I move through my work with a strict methodology of 'This needs to look extremely cool and be fun to look
at every time someone sees it...whether it's on a card or on someone's wall. I won’t tell a lie, I am a designer of eye candy and proud of it.”
"I actually take great pains to keep my work very flat and two-dimensional in scope. It's that lack of depth married with the composition and colors that
embue the characters in my world with this iconic, almost geometricly abstracted coolness and gives them their spirit. It's like playing with my own cool set
of 'Colorforms'...remember those? They're like these flat paper dolls pasted to a paper stage set."
David Paul Seymour was born and raised in the old-school suburbs of Biloxi, Mississippi, where the beautiful sand beaches and rolling tides of the Gulf
of Mexico, the deep bayou South, the jazzy voodoo allure of New Orleans and the Mississippi River all congeal into a gumbo stew of wonder and
‘character’-filled lazy days.
Drawing his own comic books at age 3 and religiously watching every Saturday morning cartoon, David Paul quickly developed the love of artistic self-
expression almost as soon as he could hold a crayon in his hand. This, along with being taken 10 times to Disney World and three times to Hawaii as a
kid; having grandparents with a swanky modern house filled with space-age décor, inspiration was plentiful from an early point. A three year period of
understudy with Charles R. Stinson, one of the greatest living working architects in the world, made a huge impact on him as well in comprehending his
own intuitive and spirited methodology of composition, color and form.
What started out with a wildly popular homemade Christmas card given out for 2005, David Paul has now in 2008 come full circle again, designing and
manufacturing his own line of occasional cards with his signature graphics (also available on limited-edition prints) and designer mind for color and
composition. During that three year span of creative discovery, he has lent his vibrant, illustrator-esque eyecandy stylings to modern gallery art shows,
apparel, skateboards, watches, recipe books and has even designed several modernist homes.
David Paul now lives in a quiet, beautiful suburb of Minneapolis where he and his wife own David*Paul*Seymour – a professional studio producing
sought-after lines of designer occasional cards and limited edition hand-signed and numbered art prints. A father of three and lover of fun and adventure,
he also strives each day to instill into his own children the same sense of wonder, inspiration and love of creativity he experienced as a child of the 70s.
