I was in DWR today and noticed the LCW went up from $589.00 to $629. I've always wanted one of these chairs, but I just couldn't rationalize paying $500 dollars for one. Now it's well north of $600.
OK, I'm not about to blame Herman Miller or the stores selling the LCW for such a price. After all, they should be able to sell their products for whatever people will pay. I blame you all for buying them! I mean, it's made out of plywood for goodness sake. I'm sure they paid off the wiz-bang machine that makes them decades ago. A Chinese company could probably make a knock off and sell it at Walmart for $49. Oh well, I'll just have to keep checking ebay.
Forget Ebay. I've found them online for as little as 299.
here's a deal I found recently.

Jason,have
you ordered from them before? How was the quality, service and your general experience? They have some nice stuff and good prices but if the quality's not there then... not worth it.

Thanks Jason. I've seen the replicas priced pretty low as well. I'm not above buying a replica, but only if it's a true replica. I saw an LCW knockoff at Scadinavian Designs. The price was good, and it looked like the LCW, but it was very uncomfortable. They did't get the rake right and way to much pressure was placed on my tailbone. I think the beauty of the original chair is how comfortable it is.here's a deal I found recently.
These guys have free shipping

But charge a restocking fee. I just want to sit in it for 5 seconds, I'll know if it's a keeper.
I have not order from them but they had received a very good user rating on a couple of site like yahoo which I think speak highly for them. I also looked at the ones on inmod.com. If you order from them and find them to be very comfortable let me know I'd be up for getting a set myself.
I also agree the beauty of this chair is the unexpected comfort. There is however something wrong with the idea of paying almost $700 for something that is so utterly simplistic.
Furniture markup is typically 100%. Talk to an interior designer/architect friend and you can likely get the chair in the $299 range.
