Modern Phoenix Home Tour + Expo, March 24

Posted by Alison King at January 09. 2007

You're invited to spend a swell spring break with us Modern Phoencians (that's MoPhos to those in the know) on March 24 and 25, 2007. This year our theme is Progress + Preservation as midcentury modern homes come of age and become increasingly elegible for historic designation.

Our 3rd Annual Modern Phoenix Home Tour destination is Ralph Haver's Marlen Grove, one of the city's most celebrated midcentury modern tract "Haverhoods".

Our Progress + Preservation expo and home tour spotlights the urgent need to practice mid-century modern design
preservation while also honoring the independent spirits that create
contemporary design in Phoenix. This weekend event will juxtapose local
attitudes and approaches toward both Midcentury Modern and Contemporary
architecture and design. We'll take the dialogue between past and
present to the next level by bringing together a dynamic mix of
creative personalities in a variety of stimulating venues, including a
walking tour through tract homes designed by
local architect Ralph Haver.

With the generous support of The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
as a partner, sponsorships by Desert Living and The Art Institute of
Phoenix and contributions by our very own Modern Phoenix members, we
are able to bring you an even bigger and better experience then before.

Visit our official website for details.

SCHEDULED SPEAKERS

KEYNOTE: Alan Hess, author of The Ranch House, architect and architecture critic for the San Jose Mercury News.

"The Hidden History of Mid-Century Modern"

The heady years after World War II generated a wide spectrum of
startling and superb architecture. The spare structures of the Case
Study Houses contrasted with the opulent Organic designs of Frank Lloyd
Wright and his many disciples; exquisite and expensive custom homes
were balanced by the mass produced Ranch House which solved the
national housing crisis with sweeping success. This diversity has been
forgotten in recent years, though. This talk will try to remind us
about the true variety, vitality and excellence of architecture in the
mid twentieth century. Booksigning event to follow.

Hope to meet some new faces from Dwell/LiveModern there. This forum is, after all, where the original Modern Phoenix members first met up! :)
