Advice on restoring coating on Bertoia wire chairs?

Posted by Scott K at January 21. 2010
I have a set of four ca. 1959 Bertoia vinyl-coated side chairs which I grew up with and would like to restore. The problem is the wear and discoloration of the white vinyl (I think) coating which has suffered from 50 years of daily use. There are areas of dark staining and overall yellowing and spots where the metal is showing through. Since these are originals I'd like to make sure that whatever I end up doing doesn't diminish their value. I considered sandblasting and powder coating but that finish won't be the same (the original coating is very thick and rubbery). Has anybody got experience with vinyl paint? There are several makes - Plasti-Kote Vinyl Color is one - that are used to restore automotive interiors. Design Master is another that I've read about. Ideas?
