Hollywood Regency: Is it "modern?"

Throughout the construction phase of my house I have been taking the time to explore interior design, finishes, colors, furniture, etc. For the past few years I have been drawing most of my cues from "dwell" magazines and other shelter publications of its ilk. And they all seem to paint a very similar picture: mid century modern with a few "wabisabi" eclectic elements thrown in. Lots of Ikea. Lots of wood paneling, greys, whites, concrete, etc. Okay... it was interesting the first 974 times, but now: Meh. I'm kinda over it. It just seems that so many people are in pursuit of a similar look, and it just seems so worn into the ground.
More recently I have become fascinated by the Hollywood Regency style. It's eclectic, and ironic in a way... like a mash-up of Bauhaus + art deco + midcentury modern + arts and crafts + French modern + shabby chic + Asian + King Louis. It's sort of like post- post- post-modernism. And even though it incorporates many ornate design details that seem to be the antithesis of "modern," when combined effectively, the results seem refreshingly modern. There are many examples of this at: http://www.kwid.com/ . Oh, the Viceroy Santa Monica is my favorite.
So do you consider this to be modern? Or does it make you want to hurl... Just curious...
Agree this is a much more fun and interesting look than the cookie-cutter "modern" we're presented with. It's probably not to everyone's taste, but isn't that the whole point of creating spaces, to realize your ideals as opposed to appealing to the masses? I like it, and I'm a little inspired myself now. In a similar vein, I love the Delano and Shore Club in Miami, and am looking forward to seeing what the Mondrian looks like. Thanks, Ed.
