'54 BH&G Home for All America

Posted by Robert Searcy at August 05. 2005

In 1954 Better Homes and Gardens did a national promotion with a great MCM style house they built around the country. In Tennessee the home was built in Knoxville at Wesley Road and Stockton Road in West Hills. The entire article is downloaded on www.glenbrookvalley.com.

Anybody familiar with the current state of this former show house?

This is interesting! I live in this area. Not in West Hills
directly but in the slightly newer section across from it
in a 1964.

I can take a pic of this house, pretty sure I know the one!
Extremely cool homes in this area. This whole neighborhood
really needs some Historic Modern protection. A great home
was remodeled recently and just ruined the charm and the
original architecture.

It's a concern of mine personally not only to develop
the new modern but to take care of the old. Thanks for
sharing the article. Will try to get a pic up this week!

Stopped by yesterday

Posted by Andrew Holt at August 24. 2005

This is a really cool place. Looks to be in fairly
decent condition. It sold about a year or two ago
as I recall but was not on the market for more than
2 weeks. My Wife and I were both stunned. It was as
if the FS sign was never in the yard!

The trees are a bit full but should be able to get a
couple of pics. Unfortunately didn't have my camera
in the vehicle with me yesterday. Will make it a point
to drop by there this week and grab pics.

The Home next door to it is great too.
These two stand out more so than the rest but
there are some really great homes in the area.

I would really like to see some protectionist
neighborhood society put together to keep things
from happening like the other home I had mentioned.
It was not a remodel so much as a ruination of
terrific architecture and potential. A real shame
that whoever did this didn't realize it. If anyone
local reads this and wants to help form a group
please get in touch.

I'll have those pics posted asap.

There was a tree down

Posted by Andrew Holt at September 27. 2005

Sorry for delay folks! I drove by to check the place out but didn't have my camera the first time. That week a storm blew a tree down
that has been mostly cleaned up. I've been out of town and just getting settled. Will make point to get a pic this week. Ecuses,
exuses...I know...;)

I just discovered this site and I'm thrilled to find other modernists in Knoxville, even if this was posted 2 years ago! Maybe someone will see this post.

Just beyond the house at Wesley and Stockton (on Stockton) is another beautiful mid-century home...It looks like a Cliff May Ranchos

This is the former home of Julie Warren Martin, now Julie Warren Conn, stone sculptor. She studied at the University of Tennessee (first MBA in sculpture from UTK) and currently lives in Kentucky, I believe. I've been in the house several times about 20 years ago. I was friends with her daughter. I've even stayed in the front bedroom the night before a whirlwind trip to Atlanta. I don't remember much about this house except for the open floorplan.

Very nice house, but I agree that the house next door to it is even better.
