Hi all,
I am new to this forum, and am excited to see this kind of group in Jacksonville. My husband and I are starting to work with an architect for the design of our modern home, and are desperate to find a builder who won't look at us like we have 4 heads when we show them our ideas. We also need to learn more about the process, building materials, estimations in costs... etc etc... so we are looking forward to meeting with you all. We will be there on the 20th. As far as venue, I was surprised to see Madrid as a suggestion - my brother-in-law owns the place. He is now closing early on mondays, but he said he would be happy to keep it open for us if we decide to meet there.
So there's my I
Looking forward to meeting everybody.

Welcome to the site. Thanks for the heads up on Madrid. I was trying to get a head count so I could tell them how many. If you would like, send me a e-mail and I will add you to our e-mailing list. We have about 30 people on the list, that's pretty exciting for Cowford....I mean Jacksonville. Look forward to hearing about your design process. I have two builders in mind that can do the job and I will be a licensed contractor in a couple of months. Can you share who your architect is?

I... will be there, with the impending sounds of slot machines in my head!

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

thank you greg
my email address is claudia@riverainteractive.com
please let me know about those builders! the architect we are working with is actually not licensed in florida, so that's an obstacle... (who is going to sign the plans for us). she is fairly new to jacksonville and has practiced in pennsylvania.
i think my brother and sister-in-law and i will be at the emerging archotects show tonight. hopefully i will meet some of you there?

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

yo, greg excellent turn out for the FiCoMo meeting last night. I think that the tides are turning in J-ville and that we may yet see a modernist neighborhood in the River City... let's keep the progess going and excellent work on keeping the movement moving.

Posted by Greg Beere at June 23. 2005

Thanks Miguel, it was a nice turn out. I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend Monday night's meeting. If I counted correctly, we had about 15.5 people. We had a great time with great people and great food. I can't thank the folks at Madrid enough. The restaurant stayed open late for us and the owners were wonderful. I am working on the two stop modern house tour for some time before the end of August. As soon as I get the details together I will let everyone know what is going on (Nitin, if you read this, give me a call).

We have proven in a very short time that there are people in Jacksonville that love not only modern architecture, but a modern lifestyle. If someone in Jacksonville can sell a modern home that isn't even on the market, there is hope for modernism in J-ville.

Some of you guys (and gals) in the Gainesville area, we would love to see you. If there is a better time to set up the meeting to make it more convenient, please let me know.

Hope everyone is having a great summer!
I will talk to you soon,

Greg

* Thanks again to Zac and his wife for there help afterward.

Sorry guys, I'm still hear, just got covered up with work for a minute. I am in desperate need of some First Coast Modern therapy. I have been sucked into the vortex of French Country and popcorn ceilings. Miguel, I think we would love to see your house before it is gone. I am open for a dinner or adult beverage meeting almost any time. The only time that is bad for me is the weekend if August 19th, other that I am wide open.

What about some time the week of the 8th, maybe even that Monday?

Let's get some feed back. Any suggestions?
Fuel? London Bridge? Madrid? Miguel’s House?

If we pick a date, I will send out an e-mail to everyone ASAP.

PS – I ordered the publications from Portland, Oregon on the 25’ X 100’ lot competition. Some pretty cool structures. I will bring.

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

Posted by Greg Beere at August 16. 2005

Summer is almost over, school has started, and fall is almost here. Well, the first two are correct; we don't really have a fall in Jacksonville. One day it is 90 degrees and the next day it is 30.
It seems like everyone has had a busy summer, but there are a few of us who are ready to get back to our modernist gatherings.
I am leaving for Atlanta tomorrow and I think I am going to hit the Atlanta Modernist meeting. I am not quite sure why it is not listed on the Atlanta geographic forum.
It will be interesting to see how there turn out is.
I would like to propose a meeting for Monday September 5th with the location TBD. I have been happy with all of our locations so far, but I am open for suggestions. Anyone up for a beaches location? Zac, you don't get to vote.
I hope everyone has had a great summer and I look forward to seeing everyone.
Please post a response or send me an email if you can attend the meeting.
See you soon.

Greg

why don't i get a vote? you didn't like madrid?

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

Posted by Greg Beere at August 17. 2005

No, Madrid was great and we can do it again.
I meant you don't get a vote for a beach location, but anyway I was just kidding about you not getting a vote. You get one and your wife gets one, and a couple more if you want to throw them in the hat.
I am heading to Atlanta; I will talk to you next week.

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

that's what i thought

we could BBQat Hanna Park or something.

the average temperature on Sep 12 (the revised date for the meeting - the 5th islabor day) is not too too hot (last year there was a high of 81 and a low of 78 ).

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

Posted by John Greenman at August 17. 2005

Hi everyone. I just moved here from Austin and and am eager to meet fellow modernists in Jax. I will be at the Sept. 12th meeting. Here's a vote for keeping it somewhere closer to downtown.

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

Posted by Miguel Martinez at August 17. 2005

downtown or the beach... is there a inbetween?? hmmm... there is the always entertaining tinseltown area?? and the fabulous St Johns Town Center?? maybe what we need are some bison burgers?? at the beach itself?? ragtime???

anywhere i don't care its on the calendar!! 4 days before closing for me...

there maybe a modernist celebration at the house on St Augustine road beforehand... more to come on that!!!

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

Can't wait to hear about the St. A Rd. Celebration.........
Most people I am hearing from are thinking they want to be near the downtown area. There is London Bridge and maybe even Burrito Gallery. San Marco is close and may have a good location.
An update:
I just returned from Atlanta. I was visiting some friends but I also went to a modern meeting at Octane that was hosted by www.atlmodern.com. There was a nice turn out. I met Bryan Russell who is part of the firm http://www.dencitydesign.com/. I also met a couple of other modernists; one is on this forum and is looking for a builder in the Atlanta area to build her new home that Dencity designed.
If you have not already, check out these two sites.
We will choose a location for the coming meeting by next weekend. Go ahead and mark your calendars for Sept. 16th.

Have a great week!
See you soon.

A quick reminder……………………………………..

First Coast Modern Meeting

Meeting Date: Monday September 12th, 2005 (Tomorrow)
Time: 6:30 P.M.
Venue: London Bridge Eatery and Pub
100 East Adams St.
Jacksonville, FL 32202
904.359.0001
Info: http://downtownjacksonville.org/detail/?loc_id=2004page_id=18

This rustic pub is located across the street from the old Downtown Library and is not - by any stretch of the imagination - a modern space, but we should be able to talk and have some fun. Be thinking about possible future venues where we may be able to meet.

fellow modernist October is almost over, i no longer have a modern home and am jonesing for some modern talk Greg, when is the next meeting or are we out of beer money? It seems that we have lost some modernist in the area, but the fight must continue. We must continue to feed the flames of modernism in jacksonville. So i call for another FCM meeting!! let's coordinate a date and place.. for november if october is out of the question??? let's not allow the momentum to cease... we must gather and feed the fire of modernism in the river city....

Hi everybody! I'm new to the forums, and quickly developing a love for Modernist architecture and interior design. Currently, I teach art to children at the Cummer Museum and through an outreach program. I am also a printmaker, my work can be seen in the gallery at Reddi Arts November through December.
I've watched Jacksonville grow for the past fifteen years and I am thrilled to see this kind of modernist development emerge locally. I would love to attend the meeting for November, please keep me informed. My e-mail address is Charlescoates@mac.com

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

Posted by Greg Beere at November 08. 2005

Hello all
It seems like it is getting close to Modern Meeting time her in North East Florida. I have been talking with a couple of you outside of the forum about some dates and ideas for venues. I think everyone enjoyed the video at the Fuel meeting, so we are in search of fun and informative videos on modern design and architecture. If any of you have access to such, please let me know. I promise we will not meet at London Bridge any more unless you just want to sweat and drink cheap pints. We have tossed around the idea of a November meeting, but if it does not happen next week, we run into the Thanksgiving holiday. How does Tuesday December 6th sound? We can call it the FiCoMo Holiday Extravaganza. (Is that to over the top?) I have had requests to change the meeting day because Mondays are hectic for many of you. Let's see how Tuesday works. We are still scoping out meeting places, so please feel free send me ideas and suggestions.
We have a great group of people and we would like to keep the momentum going. One of the most important things to remember is this is an open meeting. If you want to share a cool book, products, and/or web site, please share at the meeting. We want this to be a place where ideas grow. Jacksonville is a wonderful city to live and raise a family, but if we keep building McMansions farther and farther out of the core, how will we ever build a strong cultural base. If you have read the book by Richard Florida[em]The Rise of the Creative Class [/em] http://www.creativeclass.org/_flight_risequoteworthy.shtml
you know that it is not the Jaguars that make Jacksonville successful, it is the diversified culture. It is important to have good coffee shops, live/work residences, music venues, museums and yes………modern architecture and design. Okay, sorry, I will get off of my soapbox rant now. We know we all love modern architecture, modern design, and modern furniture, but modernism is not just these things, modernism is a way of life. It is our job to educate Jacksonville and explain that you can live in a 100 year old home in Springfield and still love modernism. We have some very talented architects, designers, and realtors that love talking design and theory as well as those who just love modernism and want to build, remodel, and participate.
As usual I look forward to seeing everyone as well as hearing about your projects and ideas. Please contact me if you are not on the mailing list and would like to be added. Also, if you are on the mailing list and you no longer wish to receive notices, please send me a request to be removed.
Hope to see everyone December 6th.

first coast modern meeting

where: the bay at 8th and main street (next to henrietta’s)
time: 6:30 pm
address: 1850 main street . springfield

We are having a modernist gathering next Tuesday the 6th of December. The guys at The Bay are opening up just for us (Let's make it worth their while). We are trying to get a DVD from the California prefab conference from earlier this year, to watch (Keep your fingers crossed). Please come and enjoy talking with your modern peers, as well as, design professionals who all love modernism and modern design. We are getting excited about the coming year with the introduction of a First Coast Modern web site, and, First Coast Modern products. Be on the look out for one of our own, Miguel Martinez’s house (the one he sold) in the coming January issue of Jacksonville Magazine. You can see pictures of it by clicking on the eleven-squared link and going to portfolio / Martinez residence.

http://www.eleven-squared.com/

Miguel should be there Tuesday if you have any questions for him. If you did not know already, Miguel built this home for himself and sold it to a couple who just stopped by and made him an offer (the house was not on the market) I don’t know about you guys, but if that is not proof that modern design has a home in Jacksonville then I don’t know what is.

I know that this time of year can be hectic for us all, but even if you can not stay for long, we would love to have you just stop by and say hi. As usual, bring your friends and invite whomever you think might be interested. I look forward to seeing everyone who can make it Tuesday and those who can not, please have a safe and happy holiday season.

hey, where did everyone go?? what happened to the FICOMO? is that it, we throw in the towel? is Jacksonville just to backward to support modernism..is this the land of Martha Stewart and hicks who don't give a damn??? well, i don't believe that, and i know that isn't the fact!! modernism is in jacksonville and it is here to stay!! I have joined the program committee for the AIA and am trying to bring architects and artists modern!! to Jacksonville people such as Mehrdad Yazdani; Thom faulders; Marlon Blackwell; Craig Borum of PLYARCH; Alan Wexler; Gail Peter Borden; lightroom from decatur georgia!! Downtwon Artwalks are becoming more and more modern... eleven-squared showed in the March Artwalk and garnered a lot of attention and possible leads into converting plain old jacksonville homes into modern homes. A different mind set of person is coming to jax young people tired of the cookie cutter crap developers dish out! people talk about Frank gehry... rem Koolhaas they read Dwell and interiors they are young and want their own mark on history, even in Jacksonville. will it be easy is anything easy??? but things are happening!! the Emerging Architects will be holding another gallery this year during architecture week. it will be held at the gallery at 11E... downtown open to the public! it will ehibit the work of up and coming local architects, as well as a display for a local competition! So i say... let's not give up, call a meeting for this month or the next! keep the ball rolling, the first coast modern website will be up soon... and remember that it takes one voice to start an uproar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey - don't fold yet. I found the same thing with the Delaware Valley group - this messageboard is not enough to sustain a group yet. I took email addresses and I supplement posts here with emails around to the group. Even though we have only met 6 months apart I know I can get at least a half dozen people out. Pick through the posts here and grab peoples email. Send around - people care but are busy.

Re: Jacksonville Modernist Meeting

Hello all, I had this weird feeling I should stop by tonight.
Greg, thanks for the encouragement. I just get tired of fighting this web site. Live Modern is kind of like your favorite restaurant with the most awesome food and the worst waiters on the planet.
Miguel, please send me your current e-mail. I am ready for a meeting. Jason and I are thinking about moving everything to a blog. Anyone, everyone, drop me a note; let me know what is going on. Let's pick a date in August at a place with good AC. Tell your friends, heck, tell your enemies. We had a good thing going. I still have the Prefab Proactive DVD (Only four people watched it at the last meeting) as well as 700 photos from CA Boom 3 in LA.
I know everyone is busy, kids out of school, summer trips, lying on the beach, and of course.......WORK.
After I speak with a couple of people I will set a date and post it here as well as mail it out.
Ok, ok........I’m awake again with a little flame under my rear.

Miguel, thanks for telepathically sending me the mental modern message.

Thanks again Lav for your slight kick in the butt.
